Aquatics expert William Ramos named to American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council

William Ramos, assistant professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, has been appointed to the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council.

"Selection for membership to serve on the council is certainly an honor for me," said Ramos, director of the IU Aquatic Institute. "I am very much looking forward to contributions that can be made as a representative of Indiana University and the School of Public Health-Bloomington to an organization that I hold in highest esteem. I feel confident that my multidisciplinary background in the area of aquatics will serve well in assisting to advance the mission of the American Red Cross through evaluating methods, techniques and current research."


The council comprises nationally recognized experts drawn from a wide variety of scientific, medical and academic disciplines. The council guides the Red Cross on emergency preparedness and practices that align with the latest evidence-based scientific and medical knowledge.

"Professor Ramos has built his career on an in-depth knowledge of aquatic environments and their relationship to public health and safety," said Mohammad Torabi, dean of the School of Public Health-Bloomington and Chancellor's Professor. "His extensive contributions to the field of aquatics, including drowning prevention, make him an exceptional member of the panel and demonstrate the breadth and depth of academic excellence our school represents."

"Professor Ramos is truly an asset to the school and all of Indiana University," said Bryan McCormick, chair of the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies. "His research and expertise bring a wealth of knowledge to his role on the council, to the benefit of everyone relying on the valuable knowledge the American Red Cross represents and, specifically, to the Scientific Advisory Council."
